St. John's Staff

Rev. Ken Gibson

Picture
Pastor Ken Gibson serves as Pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mendota, IL.  Pastor Ken (PK) comes to us with a wide range of experiences both in and outside of the church.

PK has a degree in Agriculture Education and early in his adult life did in fact teach Vo-Ag.  Right out of college he worked as an Ag Chemical Representative for Stauffer Chemical Company and served a territory in nearby Henry and Bureau counties.  He also farmed part-time while teaching Vo-Ag in Freeport and Lena Illinois.  PK served for 4 years as a Country Companies insurance agent prior to attending seminary.  When he finally submitted to the call to attend seminary, he and his family moved to Dubuque, IA to attend Wartburg Theological Seminary.

Upon graduating from WTS, PK accepted a call to serve as Pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell, MI, way up on the Keweenaw Peninsula which is the upper peninsula of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  After five years, he was then called to serve in the development office at Wartburg Theological Seminary.  PK served at the seminary for 7 years; and he concluded his time there serving as the Vice-President of the Mission Support office.  PK then served for 1.5 years as Vice President of Mission Support for Hillcrest Family Services which is a Methodist and Presbyterian social service agency in Dubuque.

PK returned to the call most dear to his heart, to serve as a Parish Pastor.  He accepted a call to serve as the Senior Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Woodstock, IL where he remained for 11.5 years.  If you add up all those years, it equates to over 25 years in service to the Church as an ordained pastor.

Pastor Ken and his wife Yvonne are excited to be in Mendota now and they, along with their dachshund Bob, are thankful for the wonderful parsonage to call home.  In many ways, being in this area is a "coming home" type of experience for them both as PK is a Kewanee High School graduate and Yvonne graduated from Elmwood High School.

Yvonne has two children and PK has two children and between them they boast of 7 grandchildren.  They enjoy spending time with their children and grandkids. They also enjoy spending time camping in their fifth wheel camper.  PK is very much looking forward to local parades or any other event that will allow him to ride his 1939 John Deere B.

Pastor Ken's email address is pkgibson@stjohnsmendota.org.

(from the February 2022 Eagle newsletter)
Hello, St. John’s!

By now, I have met many of you, but in case I haven’t, I am Vicar Anthony Windau, your new intern from Wartburg Seminary.  I cannot express enough how excited and thankful I am to be here for the next eight or so months.  Internship is a formative time in a seminary student’s education.  I can tell already I’ve landed in a great place with kind people and a great supervisor.

A little about me: I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the youngest of seven kids!  Although born and raised a Roman Catholic, I left and joined the ELCA in High school after working for my home congregation.  I attended college at UW-Eau Claire, where I studied History, Religious studies, and Middle Eastern studies.  During college, I discovered my call to ministry through my involvement with the Lutheran campus ministry.  All my free time in college was spent with the campus ministry or local ELCA congregation, which supported it.  It was joked that I was their unofficial associate pastor!  After graduation in the spring of 2019, I moved to Dubuque, Iowa, and started attending Wartburg Seminary.  I worked with the maintenance crew during my first two years, which was a wonderful experience.  You’ll hear lots about them in my sermons and stories.  Outside of church life, I have two dogs I rescued, their names are Daisy and Chick, and I love them!  I also am an amateur woodworker, avid reader, and now published theologian (a book review of mine was put in Currents in Theology and Mission Vol. 49 No. 1).  I love to hike, spend time with my friends, and play video games online with a few of my brothers.

In the coming months, I hope to get involved with the high school youth group while still learning the day-to-day life of a pastor.  Everything from preaching and leading worship to council meetings to mission trips, I’ll be doing as your intern!  Thank you for this opportunity to be at St. John’s and learn from you all.

Peace!
Vicar Anthony
